iPhone 8 and X ranked as 2nd and 3rd in 2017

Google has released its annual Year in Search, revealing the top trending search terms of 2017. The iPhone, not too surprisingly, ranked high -- specifically the iPhone 8, which hit No. 2 on the global search list, and the iPhone X, which ranked third. The top trending worldwide term was Hurricane Irma.

2017 was a big year for the iPhone. Apple marked the 10-year anniversary of the first iPhone by releasing the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, as well as the dramatically redesigned iPhone X. Although Apple didn't take the wraps off the s7 edge glass replacement until September, rumors about the 10-year anniversary iPhone were circulating throughout the year.

It's worth noting that the rumors often referred to the iPhone X as the iPhone 8 -- and the 8 and 8 Plus as the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus. The name galaxy s7 edge screen replacement cost wasn't rumored until much closer to the reveal. This is likely why iPhone 8 ranked higher than iPhone X.

Google also separated terms into categories ranging from Elections, Actors and Memes. Consumer tech got its own category, with searches for popular products such as the Nintendo Switch (No. 3), Samsung Galaxy S8 (No. 4) and Xbox One X(No. 5). The iPhones of course ranked Nos. 1 2 in this list. To see all of Google's terms, check them out here.

Besides just listing the popular searches, Google wanted us to know that people spent more time searching using the word "how" than before. Whether it was, "How do wildfires start?" or, "How to calm a dog during a storm?" Google put a positive spin on these searches in its blog post, saying that they showed people's desire to give back and serve our communities. It even made a video in honor of people asking "how," which can be seen below.

iPhone X reveals the secrets of iPhones yet to come

Apple bills the iPhone X as "the smartphone of the future."

But we're sitting here tinkering with the iPhone X now, and can't help but to wonder what's next.

Fortunately, the new features of the iPhone X -- the TrueDepth camera, Face ID and even the new, bezel-less design -- offer hints of where the wholesale Samsung Galaxy S8 LCD screen may go next. This is what Apple does: introduce a series of features over several generations, like Apple Wallet and the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, only to combine them into a new capability like Apple Pay years later.

"If the iPhone X is Apple's foundation for the next 10 years, then what we see now will be the springboard for future iterations," said Ramon Llamas, an analyst at IDC.

Thanks to the clues left in the last two generations of iPhones, we were prepared when Apple finally shed the physical home button on the iPhone X.

So what does the future of the iPhone have in store for us? We offer a few educated guesses -- and our own personal hopes -- for what we'll see in the next generation of the iPhone.

The iPhone X boldly replaced the home button with a series of swipes and an emphasis on the larger side button.

The transition didn't need to be that extreme. In fact, the iPhone X's longer display is perfectly suited for a virtual home button -- one that can change depending on the app or situation. Apple has already done a good job creating the illusion of physical buttons with its haptic feedback -- those virtual buttons for the flashlight and camera on the lock screen are good examples.

iPhone X home button

Bringing back a virtual home button may not seem to make sense when there's already a totally new Samsung Galaxy S8 display interface, but mixed with pressure-sensitive and tactile feedback, it could be used to add ways to access things like folders, recently-used apps, or bring up a larger dock featured in the iPad Pro.

You can see Apple more aggressively use 3D Touch to create the illusion that you're actually clicking down on a button, which, we have to admit, is more satisfying than a virtual tap. Why not have a multipurpose pressure zone that can be turned on to control more things at a tap?

Update Button on Pixel Devices to Finally Work in 2018

The Check for update button on Pixel and Nexus devices has in recent times become a redundant feature, which ends up annoying users who love to press it despite knowing that it doesn't really work. All that is set to change, for good, in 2018 when Google issues an update that puts the button to good use.

Check for Update Button on Pixel, Nexus Devices to Finally Work in 2018

Back in September, Googler Elliott Hughes had posted on Google+ that the Check for update button had started working with updates getting shown on the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus parts once the button got clicked. But, unfortunately, a Google Play Services update soon broke the feature again. Hughes is back with an update on the bug and it seems 2018 is when users will finally get to put the button to use, as it has been fixed internally.

Despite a fix for the feature, Hughes writes that non-Googlers will only be able to use it by next year when internal testing gets completed. Hughes does note that as long as your device is running latest Google Play services, there won't be any requirement to sideload any Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus spare parts or factory image. This method also goes past the regular rollout scheme of Google, so even if there is 1 percent rollout done and 1 percent users have the update, clicking on Check for update will make that update available for your device.

He also says in the post that this update to the Check for update button is not just limited to Pixel or Nexus devices, and instead applies to others that use Google's OTA system. According to the Googler, this feature is not exclusive to Android Oreo. "The AOSP Settings app basically sends out an intent when you go into the system update section, and if you're using Google's OTA system, Google Play Services steps up and shows its UI," said Elliott Hughes in the Google+ post.

After some leaks and rumours, it is now reported that HMD Global is hosting an event in China on January 19 to formally unveil the Nokia 9. The Finnish company is said to showcase the Nokia 8 (2018) in addition to its next flagship model at the Chinese event. Last month, we saw a protective case of the Nokia 9 listed online that revealed its entire build.

Nokia 9 to Launch on January 19 Alongside the Nokia 8 (2018): Report

Chinese site MyDrivers reported that the Nokia 9 and the next-generation Nokia 8 both will have customised experience for the Chinese market. This suggests that the handsets may not have Google services and will instead come with some local counterparts. Also, HMD is likely to offer a custom ROM on both the wholesale Samsung Galaxy S6 LCD screen to match the preferences of Chinese customers.

In addition to unearthing the announcement schedule, MyDrivers has leaked a screenshot that appears to detail the prices of the Nokia 9. If we believe some ongoing rumours, the Nokia 9 will feature a 5.5-inch QHD display and would have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC. The protective case of the smartphone that was spotted on Amazon UK pointed at a curved-glass display, similar to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. The case also suggested that handset would have a back-facing fingerprint scanner and a dual-camera setup. Further, the smartphone is expected to have USB Type-C port and is likely to run Android Oreo out-of-the-box.

Similar to the Nokia 9, the Nokia 8 (2018) is likely to come with a Snapdragon 835 SoC and the latest Android Oreo experience. HMD Global started rolling out an Oreo update for its 2017 Nokia 8 last month. That new version upgraded the Samsung Galaxy S6 display with a list of features such as Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode, notification dots, and an enhanced Settings menu.
